This week all classes have been visited by some lovely people from NSPCC, talking to them about being safe online. Your child will have a booklet from them in association with O2. Leaf Man
Today, the children in Cassatt class went on a nature walk to find different signs of Autumn. When the children got back they emptied out their buckets (which were full of beautifully coloured leaves) onto the table to dry. The children enjoyed examining the leaves closely and found lots of different colours, features and shapes.
In the afternoon, the children did lots of different things with their leaves! They made collages, printed with them, and even dressed up using them! We will be extending this learning by reading Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert tomorrow.

Pink is the best colour ever!
Pink is the best colour ever!
In P4C (Philosophy for Children) this week we have been exploring the statement:
"Pink is the best colour ever!"
The children were using their thinking thumbs for the first time to share their opinions on whether or not they agreed or disagreed with this statement.

Here are some of their opinions:
Frida: "No because yellow is a bit more brighter."
Alfie G: "I like green and green is only dark. Pink is light and I like dark things to play with."
Elliot: "I love white because I like trains and trains have white on them. I love white and pink."
Evie: "Yes (I agree) because pink is my favourite colour."
Alfie B: "Black is the best colour because everyone wears black jumpers."

KS1 P4C - Happiness Hat
In KS1 P4C club, Miss Lawrence shared her new invention with the children. It was a Happiness Hat that made the wearer exceptionally happy! I asked the children what they thought of the hat, and whether they thought it needed altering in any way.
"You should only wear it when you're really, really sad" Aron says
"You can't be happy all the time!" Fenton adds
Nicky agrees and says "Yeah because if you don't have sadness you won't know what happiness feels like"
The children then designed their own happiness inventions to include their additional features and considerations. Most of the children included timers and sensors to ensure that it only turns on when the wearer is truly unhappy.

Jeans for Genes - Reception
For Jeans for Genes day in Reception, we learnt a little bit about genetics and why we raise money for different genetic disorders.
The children learnt that genes are little pieces of information that live in the building blocks of our bodies. Sometimes, there might be a mistake in a gene which means that the body might work differently to how we would expect. We spoke about how being different doesn't mean a person affected by a genetic disorder can't have a full and happy life. The children really understood how everyone is unique, with their own identity and we celebrated the fact that we learn, move, see and even speak differently.
As we have been thinking about Agent Problem Solver this week, the children then got thinking about different problems that might face people with genetic disorders. We thought about what someone might do if there was a disorder that meant a person couldn't walk:
"You could go like this and 'swizz'"
Amelia tells us using her hands to pretend to 'pedal' a special type of wheelchair.
"You could use a walking stick if you can walk a bit but not lots"
Henry added.
We then met Miss Lawrence's friend called Max who told us about his genetic disorder which means he can't sweat. The children thought about what Max would need to do to keep cool.
"He needs to drink lots of water"
"He can't play football in the sun for too long or he'll get very hot"
"He can use a fan or the wind to cool him down"
The favourite suggestion however, was...
"Max could eat loads of ice cream!"
The children were really engaged during this carpet time, and came up with some excellent discussions in both their talk partners and as a whole group.

Reception staying for lunch!
The children in Reception stayed for lunch for the very first time today! They used manners when asking for their food, were able to use cutlery to eat and they could even take their tray over to be washed after eating.
The teachers were all truly amazed at the children's independence!

Maths in Reception
This week the children have been engaging with lots of different maths activities during their child initiated play (CIP). From measuring the teachers, to fishing for numbers, even counting the chicken pox on the baby in the home corner (!), we have been excellent Agent Inquirers.
We are also learning to show a 'can do' attitude when it came to doing some tricky maths with the teachers. Instead of saying "I don't know that" the children were encouraged to say "I don't know that YET" to nurture their sense of open mindedness and perseverance.

Holiday School refurbishments
Over the summer holidays, we’ve made some transformations to
the inside of the school building.
Working with school interior designer Envoplan,
we’ve covered over 2 internal courtyards, creating some lovely new learning
spaces.
We now have a new music room, which will give the children a
bright new space to learn and discover the joys of music. The walls surrounding
this classroom have been given specialist acoustic treatment to ensure that
sound doesn’t disturb the nearby classrooms.
The other courtyard will form a multipurpose space – used
for teaching, reading and other learning activities.
The surrounding corridor areas have also been renovated to
accommodate these new classrooms. They are already getting lots of use!

The first week in Reception
Reception children have just completed their first week at school, and what an exciting week it was! Children have been introduced to different areas in their learning environment throughout the week to help them have independent access during choosing time throughout the year.
The children have really enjoyed the outside area, which has undergone a makeover over the summer. We have new writing, creative and construction sheds that have been a real hit. Take a look at some of the things we have been up to in our new outside learning space.
