Year 5 Newsletter

 Year 5 have worked extremely hard this week. Miss Hodges and Miss Crawford were blown away with everyone’s effort in their independent write and each student worked even harder when trying to improve their work through feedback. 

In addition, Year 5 had lots of fun this week learning about cubes and cuboids. The children were getting very competitive when deciding whether a net formed a cube or not and hopefully can all now recite the properties of the two shapes. 

We had a fabulous Geography lesson this week. The children remembered all of their fantastic facts about Indonesia and enjoyed learning about the causes of earthquakes. The children were able to explain the role of the tectonic plates to their partners using their hands. We look forward to moving onto tsunamis next week!

 We have had a busy first week back in Year 5! 

This week the children started writing their own narrative story based off of Katherine Rundell’s ‘The Explorer’. The children have shown some great skill in their writing and have been able to create some really powerful similes and metaphors in their work. 

In addition, the children have been continuing to learn breakfast vocabulary in French and have been able to become super fluent in order to play a competitive game of four in a row. We hope to improve our french language further and introduce restaurant role play!

We were super lucky with the weather this week, so Year 5 managed to get outside to create some nature observational drawings. The children’s skill in this area was astonishing and the children really enjoyed getting outside for their learning.

 Year 5 have worked so hard this week in their learning. They have managed to write the story ‘I believe in unicorns’ by Michael Morpurgo by using great narrative language features such as personification and metaphors. This enabled the children to create a moving atmosphere, which successfully showed the bombing of a small village. 

In science, the children have been continuing their learning of life cycles and linking with our science, Malala class were able to release their butterflies into the wild. Hopefully, Mandela will release theirs next week!

Finally, in History the children wrote some amazing newspaper articles which reported on the deeds of the Suffragettes. These newspapers were written from the anti-suffragette viewpoint and were therefore shaming the women and the actions they were partaking in to get the vote.

Year 5 Newsletter

 Year 5 have been very busy this week creating their final Anderson Shelter designs. The children used their imaginations to make their basic shelter model look as realistic as possible. In our English lessons this week, the children were introduced to our balanced argument topic, ‘is animal testing morally right’. We ended the week with a debate, using sentence stems to structure our ideas. In our PSHE lesson, we looked at different scenarios and rated ‘how big is our problem?’ This helped the children to consider the difference between every day problems that might arise and really serious situations and how a different strategy may be needed to deal with the situation. 

Year 5 D&T

 Wow! What a day we have had creating the structures for our Anderson Shelters! The children have learnt many skills today including, using a hacksaw and bench hook, gluing triangle corners for a join and creating tabs to stick our front and end pieces to the main structure. The children were really enthused by today’s learning and are excited for the next stage... decorating!!!

 We have been exploring lots of different things this week in year 5 including testing out and experimenting with different materials to improve a parachute. We then put these to the test with our egg-cellent passengers. We have taken the role of Cameron this week from Pig Heart Boy and have started our diary entries to explore his thoughts and emotions at this point in the story. To really help us explore his true emotions, we used the drama hot seating technique. Congratulations to everyone in year 5 who also attended the tag rugby competition.

 What a great first week back! The children have dived into some great learning in writing this week, they have written a set of instructions on how to wash a jellyfish. This writing topic has been a laugh for us all and has set us up perfectly for our independent write next week.

In PE this week, we have begun our new unit on football. The children enjoyed improving their dribbling skills through a variety of team games. 

We also had our final materials lesson in Science this week. The children were able to explore different materials and rate the success in certain properties. We then used our knowledge to understand why certain materials are used in everyday life to build different things.

 What a busy week it has been this week in year 5. We were visited by Retune this week who helped us to tune into our mental well-being and consider ways to positively impact it using the SCALES. We have also been very busy in science looking at which liquid affects the iron-oxide reaction on nails and we learnt that this is an irreversible change. In writing this week, we have begun our recount journey of a character in Emma Carroll’s Letters from the Lighthouse, living in WWII.

 This week in Year 5, we have been very busy retelling the story of Rose Blanche in our English lessons. A story all about a little girl living in her ‘ordinary’ village during WWII, but she senses something is about to change.... We also kicked off our new Topic in science where children explored the materials around the school and considered the reasons for why certain materials are chosen, using scientific language such as transparent and opaque. We have also been very impressed with the children’s artwork and writing they have produced all about our Class Freedom Fighters: Mandela and Malala.
