Year 2 visit Mountfitchet Castle

After learning about castles this term, year 2 visited a Motte and Baily castle.

They had such fun exploring all the elements of the castle they had learnt about.

Some things were very gruesome and punishments were harsh in the medieval times! 

The children tried out the stocks.

Lunch was a highlight too!

They finished the day with some sketching of the environment.

We were very proud of the children who behaved beautifully.

 

Year 2 History - concentric castles

 

The children learnt that the Normans wanted to make their castles even better at defending the enemy, so they designed concentric castles.  They had two walls of defence! The inner wall and outer wall.  The inner wall was higher too so that the knights could see the enemy approaching.

The children worked in teams to create their own concentric castle.  They carefully made turrets/towers, the inner and outer walls and added labels too.

Year 2's World Book Day

 Year 2 had a fabulous World Book Day. 

We started our day off by having a quiz with Bellatrix Le Strange, the Snow Queen and Cruella De Vil. Then we introduced ourselves as the characters that we had come as and the word that we had chosen to describe them.

We then travelled to Narnia to meet the terrifying Snow Queen! She told us her story and we discovered just how deceitful she really was!

Then we explored the book 'Inside the Villains' and talked about what makes a good villain. We then designed our own giant and made it as terrible as we could. 

Throughout the day we shared our favourite books and enjoyed lots of new ones too! 

Year 2 have red noses, or was that Rudolph?

Year 2 have been writing a non fiction report over the last few weeks.  They have been basing their writing on hibernation and found out lots of wonderful facts which helped them in their work.  Do you know what some animals do when they hibernate? Ask a year 2 child and they will tell you!

In science the children have been thinking about being healthy and what a healthy plate of food looks like.  They even designed Santa a healthy plate of food.  Do you think he eats his sprouts?

Year 2 newsletter

This week it is UK Parliament Week which is a celebration of people power – everyone to have their own voice. We looked at individual liberty. Individual liberty means each of us having the freedom to make our own choices and do what we want - within reason. We must respect the rights of others.

We had a class debate to exercise our right to individual liberty. The debate statement was: "Animals should be set free from zoos."

First we decided whether we agreed or disagreed and we discussed our ideas with people who shared the
same opinion as us. We were very passionate!

Each side took it in turns to share their opinion, either with a new idea or building on an idea from the person before. We were all reflective, open minded and listened carefully to what others said. Everyone was able to communicate their ideas clearly and coherently.

 

No:

No! Zoos are good for protecting animals. It means we can keep all the endangered animals safe from poachers.

I disagree because if we let all the animals go back to their homes they wouldn’t actually have anywhere to go to as their habitats are being destroyed.

Yes:

I agree because animals should be able to individual liberty like people. It’s not fair that they don’t get to choose where the live.

Yes, I think they should. The zoo keepers choose their lunch every day and I would hate that. They might even like the food that they’re given. They should be able to catch their own food.

In Science, the children have been learning about the importance of  exercise and how exercising daily helps us stay strong and healthy. We learnt how to measure our pulse by placing two fingers on our wrist, neck or temple. It was tricky to feel it, so we had to sit very still and quiet. We measured our resting heart rate and then predicted whether our heart rate would increase, decrease or stay the same after walking and running on the spot. We completed the experiment and concluded that exercise increases our heart rate and therefore strengthens our heart muscle.

    

Year 2 portraits of Greta and Attenborough

Year 2 have been creating portraits of Greta and Attenborough.

They learnt how to make a water colour wash background, they mixed powder paints for the skin colour, collaged the clothes and finally added detail with pastels.

I think that you will agree they look very professional!

Year 2 dance club perform to their friends.

They have been learning a dance all term with Mrs Williams and performed like professionals!
