Feeding the birds in the forest- nursery , newsletter

We have had a wonderful time in the forest this week . We firstly read a story called 'Peck, Peck, Peck' by Lucy Cousins which was all about a bird pecking holes. After listening to hear if we can identify any birds we made special feeders to give them some food. First we took in turns covering a toilet roll in dairy free butter then we sprinkled on nut free birds seed and hung it on the trees around us. It was so exciting as the next day when we went up to the forest we noticed that they had been eaten which was great. As well as feeding the birds we used our imagination to create horses, unicorns and even dragons in the forest with big sticks and we went around the forest riding on them.

This week we have also been lucky enough to have a visit from some chicks. We all sat very quietly and still and we chose to either hold or just stroke a little tiny chick. We loved having chicks in nursery and can't wait to find out what animal will visit us next week.

Year 5 Newsletter

We have been very impressed with the children’s curiosity this week for World History week! The children in year 5 kicked off the week with some fantastic outfits for their chosen historical figure and they performed their speeches clearly and with confidence. Throughout the week, we have been learning about Jesse Owens who surprised the world at the Berlin 1936 Olympic games by winning four, unexpected, gold medals and we have used all of our new information to write a biography all about his life. The children have also created some brilliantly, bold Olympic art. In maths, the children have shown off their knowledge about shapes and we have started to explore the different types of angles and how to make estimations about the angle size and then how to check the measurement with a protractor.

How to look after a baby dragon!

The Dragon's egg hatched and not one but two dragons were born.  Each Year two class looked after one of the babies.

They had to wash it every day!  One day they came into school and it had eaten Mrs Price's chocolate!!!!

The mummy dragon left some instructions but they weren't very detailed so we wrote our own.

World History Dress Up Day in Year 5

WOW, we have learnt so much about many significant figures in history today from all over the world and from different time periods! The children prepared some factual and entertaining speeches that they performed in front of the class - I have definitely learnt a lot about different characters in history today! Can you guess who the children have dressed as?

Artwork from Year 5

This week for World History Week, the children in year 5 have been focussing on the theme ‘sporting heroes in history’ and we looked into the incredible life of Jesse Owens. Inspired by this sporting hero, we decided to create some bold, eye-catching, Olympic art! The results were fantastic!

Olympic Art

In year 5, we have been creating artwork based around the Olympic hero Jesse Owens. We carefully used water colour to create different shades for our mosaic inspired backgrounds. Both year 5 classes worked really hard to make their designs as effective as possible.

We then used black pen to make our mosaic shapes pop. Finally, we added a silhouette of Jesse Owens onto the mosaic to create an amazing mural.

Year 2 ducklings have arrived! How egg-citing!

Year 2 really is filled with egg-citement at the moment! Our duckling eggs have finally hatched!

The children watched eagerly as the ducklings popped out of their eggs, looking rather tired and wet! We had a few gasps of 'ewww, they're so slimy!' but generally on the whole the children can't believe how cute they are. We also can't believe how big they are! How did they fit inside those tiny eggs?!

The ducklings needed a good, old rest after all that hard work and so we have been letting them sleep for the last day or two.

Now the ducklings have all fluffed up and are looking much more duckling like! We can't wait for some duckling cuddles. They're getting more and more confident and they love having their voices heard (they just don't stop cheeping, even when they're sleeping!).

Richard III....friend or foe?

Lichtenstein class enjoyed a talk from historical author, Michele Schindler, about what Richard III was like as a child, king and friend. We were all surprised to hear what a ‘modern’ man he was - introducing laws to help poor people and levelling the education field.

The more we discover Richard...the more we feel his historical reputation needs an overhaul!

Super Subtraction

Today in maths, Year 3 practiced how to identify key information in worded questions and apply our knowledge to find the difference.

Below are images of some of our keen mathematicians at work. We've shown great partner work today and always aim to support our learning buddies whatever the subject.

We used a range of resources to help us develop our understanding and recognise that questions can come in all shapes and sizes.
Dienes were a great way for us to see how we can exchange hundreds, tens and ones within a subtraction sum. This made us experts when it came to column subtraction and bar models!

Here is an example of some great work we did today. It's clear we have taken pride in our work and enjoyed learning about difference, column subtraction and bar models.
Well done Year 3!

Olympic hero: Jesse Owens

Today in Year 5, we learnt all about the famous Jesse Owens. In groups, the children were able to create a presentation about a certain part of Jesse Owens’ life, all the way from birth to post-Olympic career. The children were shocked to find that due to Jesse’s skin colour, he was often dismissed or refused things. For example: Hitler refused to shake his hand at the Berlin olympics.

Dali class showed great compassion and interest in Jesse Owens’ life and we are looking forward to writing a biography on him later this week.
