Sounds in Science

 In Year 4 we have been learning about sound in science. We started by thinking about how we can hear sound and discovered that sound travels through waves as air, solid and liquid particles vibrate.  We modelled this as a class - when Miss Woodcock plucked the guitar string we (air particles) vibrated against each other and sent the sound waves! 

We also learnt how the sound travels through our ear - again we modelled this in groups becoming different parts of the ear each.  

 This week, we have focused on the difference between volume (loud or quiet) and pitch (high or low). We investigated this using bottles filled with different amounts of water. We concluded, the bottle with the smallest amount of air left at the top made the highest pitch sound because the sound waves are shorter and of a higher frequency! 

World History Day - Who are we?

 In Moore class we loved dressing up as inspirational historical figures.  Every one gave speeches explaining who they were, why they are inspirational and why they were chosen!

MEN WANTED - for hazardous journey, safe return doubtful....

Would you apply?! This afternoon Year 4 found an advert from Sir Ernest Shackleton advertising for positions as members of his crew aboard the Endurance.  We discussed that this does not sound like a very appealing, safe journey however, we applied anyway!! 

Honour and recognition in case of success - we'd love to be famous! 

Shackleton had also mentioned previously that he was looking for individuals with special talents such as singers, musicians, comedians and dancers.  This was important to raise the spirits of the crew members on the long difficult expedition. 

 

Breaking news!

 This morning, after the incredible egg discovery, Moore class became news reporters and told civilians of the breaking news!  We wrote our 'strap lines' to not only attract attention but also give lots of the key information about the event.  We then practised reading these aloud as a news reporter would and presented them to our class using the oracy skills framework as a guide.  

A dragon's egg.... at Windhill21?!

 

Wow, what an exciting discovery!!  Yesterday, we found out that over the Easter holidays a presumed dragon egg had been discovered on a nest of twigs and sticks next to the Year 6 mobiles.  Nathan and Mick (school site managers) were the first on the scene but even the police have been involved!   We are very excited to find out what happens to the egg and will bring you all the latest news! 

Moore Santa Dash!

 On Friday, Moore class enjoying a cold, muddy run around the field in aid of our Santa Dash festivities!  After 5 laps of the field they were well and truly covered in mud but it was great fun! 

Moore class strings

Recently, half of Moore class took part in their strings concert where they performed what they have learnt this term in their music lessons with Mrs White. The played cellos, violins and even a double bass and made a brilliant orchestra!

Becoming a circuit!

 How do circuits work? 

Moore class are now experts on this subject as we actually became a circuit in our last science lesson! One person became the bulb, one the battery (cell) and the others are the joining wires. We passed electrons (stones) around the circuit from the battery and the bulb lit up. 

When the battery had no charge the electrons couldn’t flow so the bulb didn’t light up. When the wire became disconnected and we broke the circuit, the bulb couldn’t light up! 

Investigating Pitch- year 4

Yesterday in science we had a lot of fun with bottle flutes. We discovered that if a bottle flute is blown with lots of water meaning less air volume the pitch is higher. If there is less water, more volume for air the pitch is lower. We even attempted playing a musical scale!

How sounds are made

Today in Year 4, we investigated how sounds were made.After looking at: rice on a drum, elastic bands on a hollow box, tuning forks, musical instruments and ping pong balls; we discovered that sounds are created by objects vibrating. We then had some fun looking at these experiments and capturing them on the Slow motion camera to clearly see the vibrations.

Today in PE we learnt how to bowl at the stumps. We enjoyed working with a specialist cricket coach.

Which liquid will dissolve the marshmallow the quickest?

In science today we have been investigating which liquid will dissolve the marshmallow the quickest. We have used a range of liquids on the ph scale to find out which was the most efficient at dissolving the marshmallow.

Were the Vikings criminal invaders?

In year 4 we have been looking at the reasons that the Vikings may have used to justify their invasions of Britain. We ordered them from the least criminal to the most criminal reasons depending on the justification the Vikings gave. An overall agreement was made that the most criminal reason to invade another country was because they enjoyed killing others!!! 

Moore Class from Maths to Art

Today in Moore Class we have been inspired by artist and scientist Jill Pelto who portrays the effects of global warming on the environment. We begun by creating a line graph to show the declining area of sea ice in the Arctic. We then investigated which animals were effect by the sea ice decreasing. Followed by a watercolour lesson in creating the sea. We then wrote about the effects of global warming on our chosen animal.  Here are our results:

Year 3 / 4 production rehearsals

Year 3/4 are well under way with their production rehearsals, things are really starting to come  together. We are getting quite excited for our performances next week. Please continue to help your children learn their lines with expression and actions. We can’t wait to show case all our hard work.

Enterprise Day!

Moore class acted like true professionals when they formed companies to design a new platform game. Inspired by real industry names, they designed multi platform games based in school. Based on school values including ‘risk taking’, pixelated characters were expected to dodge angry robotic chefs as they hurled knives (assuming they managed to avoid the profiterole volcano and custard ocean).

Year 4 Antarctic Food Web

Today in science Year 4 investigated the effects of global warming on the Krill population. We found out that krill have been declining since then1970’s all due to sea ice melting which is a direct result from global warming. Since Antarctic krill have been decreasing this has had a knock on effect to the rest of the eco-system manning that penguins, leopard seals and small toothed whales have all been affected.

Year 4 Pupil led PE session

Last week Megan M and Megan AP attended a sports course at Birchwood. After a practise last week, today they led the warm up session for our PE lesson which involved a team work game retrieving specific items based on the catergory stated by the girls. Moore class enjoyed it so much that we became very competitive and the new game became our PE lesson as teams began to work on strategies such as how to score the most points. Well done Megan and Megan for your leadership skills and clear demonstrations.

Antarctic survival skills... in miniature

In the snow last week, Moore class were desperate to try their hand at building snow shelters. Sadly, the cold white stuff disappeared before we had the chance. However, we had a go at building mini ice structures today with ice cubes and salt. The salt allowed the ice cubes to bond as it melted the edges. It was trickier than we thought but perseverance paid off!
