Miss Freeman's Virtual Sport Day Video

Miss Freeman does WH21 Virtual Sports Day

Usually I would be running a practice sports day on the school field around this time of year. Explaining all the events and allowing each child an opportunity to practice, but this year I am unable to do this.
Therefore I did a home video demonstrating all of the events for the children to see. Hopefully this will help everyone at home attempt the virtual event.

Continue to send me your pictures of your events to PE@windhill.herts.sch.uk and I will share them in upcoming blog posts and newsletters.

All completed event results need to be submitted via the online form.

Good luck!

Virtual Sports Day

Virtual Sports Day 2020

What a week to launch our schools first ever Virtual Sports Day! The weather has been on great form, which I have to say is a common theme for the Windhil21 school sports days.

I have seen many children this week on Zoom calls launching the event in school. It was wonderful to see so many happy, smiley faces all keen and enthusiastic to take part. The staff in school have been fantastic in supporting the event and using their PE lessons for children to participate in these events.

My thanks also goes out to the parents at home who have been equally supportive in timing, counting and taking pictures of their children participating in the events. The pictures I have received have overwhelmed me. I really hope all the children are enjoying our alternate sports day this year!

Finally, the biggest thanks must go to Mr Bennett who is the mastermind behind all the scoring system and without him this would not be running quite as efficiently.

House Keeping

A few questions have arisen and below I will outline the answers.

Blindfold Balance
Q: Can we rest one foot on top of the other?
A: No, the lifted foot must be raised off the floor and unsupported.

Plank
Q: The plank goes on forever. Is there a time cap?
A: Yes. When you get to 3 minutes (180 seconds), you can stop the plank.

Squats
Q: It is hard to know how low to go with the squat.
A: I advise all children to have a chair behind them and squat down to the chair and then stand back up again.

Skipping
Q: What if I do not have a skipping rope at home?
A: No problem. Jump up and down on the spot for 60 seconds and count your jumps. When submitting your score you must half the jumps achieved if you did not use a rope.

Hall of Fame
Please see some pictures of children taking part in the events from home or the local surroundings. Please take time to read the school newsletter this week where there will be even more pictures of the children enjoying the events.

Scores

Below are the current standings after week 1 of the competition. So far submissions have come in from a quarter of the children in the school community. Therefore, there is still plenty of time for these scores to change over the next couple of weeks as more children enter the competition.
Well done to Mexico who are our current leaders. Who will be leading at the end of next week?

Final Message
So far, we have had a great response to the event. Well done to all the children who have taken part so far. If you have not had an opportunity to take part there is still plenty of time to send in your results. The closing date for the Virtual Sports Day is 12pm on Friday 10th July. Winners will be announced later in the day on the 10th July.

Reception Sports Day take 2!

Reception Sports Day!

Group 2 of Cassatt and Degas today enjoyed their virtual sports day with some extra races thrown in!

We all had a great time, playing music to spur us on and cheering on our friends!
We got bronze, silver and gold stickers to celebrate where we came in our races! The children's favourite race was the egg and spoon.
The most important thing was the taking part and having so much fun!

Here are some photos from our sports day:

We had a lot of fun, and were such good sports!

Washing up liquid bubble science!

This afternoon, Bubble B at school made their own bubble solution and bubble wands! After our investigation we can conclude that fairy washing up liquid makes the largest and strongest bubbles!

If you would like to try this at home, we made bubble mixture using 2 litres of water and 1 cup of airy washing up liquid.

We made 2 types of bubble wands. 1. Using pipe cleaners we created closed shapes. 2. Using 2 straws and a piece of string looped through them.

Brightening the day!

Today in key-worker bubble 3, we thought we would brighten what was a very dull day...we created sun catchers! These will hopefully brighten up our classroom in the week, especially when the sun begins to shine again.
To make these all we did was stick tissue paper onto sticky back plastic. We could choose between whether we wanted to create a picture or a mosaic. We then placed a second sheet of sticky back plastic onto our frame to ensure our amazing work didn’t get ruined.
The sun catchers look amazing on our door!

Levers & Linkages

In key-worker bubble 3, we attempted to improve our engineering skills by developing moving mechanisms. In this D&T session, we created four different mechanisms: moving flags, waving hands, crocodile and moving dragon. Once we had assembled the mechanisms with split pins (this was very fiddly), we were able to draw our designs and place them onto the mechanisms. Despite it being very fiddly and tricky, we all created some amazing levers and linkages!

Aboriginal art

Yesterday in key-worker bubble 3, we took a journey to Australia to see how the Aborigines communicated. We learnt that as they didn’t have a language as such, they used to use cave drawings and art to tell dreamlike scenes and stories.
After looking at some art and realising the key features were bright colours, dots and patterns of animals or circles, we decided to try and create some of our own. We had to remember that aboriginal art needed to be recognisable from a birds eye view, therefore, we thought using flat 2D shapes would work best.

Rousseau Home Learning

Rousseau class have been very busy completing lots of the optional activities set for their home learning as well as their reading, writing and maths work. I have been so impressed with all they have done!

If I were a...

If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
How might you move? What might you eat?

Chick Update!

When the chicks left Year 2 in March, they were small, yellow and very fluffy. They were only just starting to grow their wings, but they had already grown much bigger than when they had first hatched!

The chicks went to a lovely home, where they had a fantastic garden to stretch their legs and run around. They have been getting bigger and bigger and now look at them! They're unrecognisable from the little, yellow things we were cuddling in March. They are now (nearly) fully grown chickens!

Here are some pictures of the chickens now:

Haven't they grown?! If you'd like to see more pictures and videos of the chickens, head over to the
Official Windhill21 Facebook page where there are lots more updates!
