Year 5 Newsletter

 In Year 5, the children loved learning about the Queen and her Jubilee. They were very interested to learn about etiquette when meeting the Queen and the many things you should not do - such as, selfies are a BIG NO! To set us up for Equality Week, we explored the poem, Still I rise, by Maya Angelou and the children learnt about her history of being a black woman growing up in a difficult time, but this did not stop her with her dreams. The children have also been working extremely hard learning the songs for the Year 5 music festival at South Mill Arts and we are excited to share this with you.

Writing

In writing, we have been inspired by the poem "The little boy who cannot see." This poem is a great reflection on Equality Week and what it means to be different and view the world from a different perspective.

We met with the Guide Dogs Charity and discussed how blindness can affect a person's life and met some very important furry guides that help visually impaired people with their daily lives.

We went on a colour walk and investigated the other sense that could be used to describe colour like 

• Yellow is the feeling of the sun on your face.
• Green is the smell of freshly cut grass.
• Blue is the taste of the sound of a whale's song.

Nursery Newsletter

This week we had a very some very exciting visitors join us from Exotic Explorers.  Minibeasts!  We had a very special session where we were able to hold and feel different minibeasts.  We learned a lot of amazing facts about these small creatures.

We saw millipedes, tarantulas, snails, and scorpions! 

We have also been celebrating the Queens Jubilee.  As part of our celebrations, we made our own crowns, threaded red, white, and blue pasta necklaces, and had a special snack.  We had our celebration lunch in the hall wearing our crowns!

Our new topic for our Religions around the World lessons is entitled ‘Special Places’.  We are starting this off by looking at homes as special places.  We looked at different homes from around the world (such as a yurt, a mud hut, a wooden house on stilts) and talked about what was the same ad what was different about them.  We then got into groups and made a special home for a toy animal, thinking about what each home would need.  We used a variety of construction resources, such as Lego, Duplo, Stickle Bricks, and wooden blocks.  I think the cuddly toys are very lucky to have such wonderful houses!

Year 2 Newsletter

In year 2 this week we have been very busy with our learning across many subjects. 

We have been celebrating The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Learning all about Queen Elizabeth and how she ascended to the throne. We designed and made our own crowns and wore them during our jubilee picnic. Mrs Price held a special assembly commemorating the Queen and picked a child with an amazing crown to come and be coronated! 

We have been busy in writing this week focusing on colour themed poetry, learning how to describe colours through our senses. To help us with this, we had an experience day, where we went into different classrooms each themed with its own colour, upon entering each room we immersed ourselves into the colour - thinking about how the colour made us feel, how it felt and describing the other senses which we were then able to use for our poetry writing.

In our religious and world views lessons we have been learning all about Islam, with this terms focus being on Ramadan and the five pillars of Islam. We learned what these pillars were and why they are important to Muslim people. We then thought about rules important to us and imagined making our own five fundamental pillars that would help us to become better people. 

Year 6 Newsletter

 Year 6 fully embraced the Platinum Jubilee last week. Dressed in red, white and blue, they showed enthusiasm for dear Elizabeth II and enjoyed celebrating during their Platinum Jubilee picnic lunch.  In constructing Royal family trees, everyone learnt how the Queen ascended to the throne and who is going to succeed her. In recognising the importance of the Commonwealth to the history of our nation, we spent time learning about the evolution of the Commonwealth, comparing and contrasting it to the British Empire that preceded it. All pupils recognised the importance of the Commonwealth today and its role in fostering international relationships and trade links. Given that we are thinking about equality this week, we were delighted to learn that the Commonwealth Games are fully inclusive for people with disabilities.

But remember - there are certain things you must never do in front of her majesty - including using slang and speaking French! 

We also got back into the swing of our writing this week, starting writing newspaper reports about valuable British artefacts stolen from the nation's museums! Headlines included "Perfect Painting Pinched!" and "Priceless Pot Pilfered!" 

We cannot wait to continue this week as we see what further speculation there is about the whereabouts of the items!  

Year 4 newsletter

 This week our teachers have been SO impressed our poetry writing.  We have been writing in the style of Maya Angelou ‘Still I Rise’. The vocabulary that we gathered linking to the topic was amazing and it has made our poems really emotional and hard hitting.  We chose this poem as Maya Angelou writes about equality between races and her message is important for everyone to listen to.  This is part of our equality week work. 

We have also focused on poetry in our reading lessons as well.  Last week, we focused on The Tyger by William Blake and we performed the poem in small groups. We put actions to our performances after watching a few different versions/performances by other people. This week, we will be focusing on poetry written by Benjamin Zephaniah - including Everybody is doing it. 

Reception Newsletter

 What a first week back! We had such a lovely Jubilee Day, which involved learning all about the coronation of Queen Elizabeth and taking part in lots of royal activities involving making crowns, painting corgis for our royal display, having our photo taken with 'Queen'  playing Pin the Tail on the Corgi, and eating our special Jubilee lunch. 

        

We've also introduced the children to a new counting resource called the 'rekenrek'. These are used throughout KS1 and into KS2 and the children worked really well with them, using their super subitising skills to help them see how many counters there were. 

We also had a wonderful visit from Exotic Explorers, who brought in some exciting minibeasts for the children to touch and even hold. The children were so brave and loved every minute, learning some really interesting facts at the same time.
