Year 5 Newsletter

The year 5 classrooms have certainly been buzzing this week! It has been great to see the children throwing themselves back into their learning and producing some great work. 

In writing this week, we have been looking at the short Disney film ‘Feast’. Using this clip we have been able to craft some great narrative writing, which includes some fantastic year 5 features. As a class, we have been able to write a model, which the children can use to help them - our narrative writing so far sounds amazing! We cannot wait to continue with our stories next week. 

We have been continuing our work on fractions in maths this week. This is a very challenging topic, but every single member of year 5 has persevered and achieved great things. 

In PSHE, we have spoken about the impact of lockdown and how this has made us feel about returning to school. We have been completing our well-being journals and thinking about how we have achieved the 5 parts of well-being (connect, active, learning, give, notice).

Finally, in science we have been exploring the materials of our school. All the children were able to explain why objects were made with certain materials, by referring to their properties. 

Reception's First Week Back!

 Reception have really enjoyed their first week back at school! We have been focusing on reminding ourselves of the rules and routines of the classroom, and the children have been doing really well with this! We have enjoyed learning about Ghana, the origin of our new story Anansi. We have also enjoyed learning traditional African songs, particularly one called Che Che Kule!

The children have loved reuniting with their friends and have been working hard in their talk partners to revisit and practice social communication skills! We focused on being Agent Respect and Agent Communicator so that our partners felt valued and heard. 

Year 2 Newsletter

Year 2 have had a great start back to school. We are all really enjoying being back together and we have certainly been very busy!

As part of our transition back to school we have been looking at the 5 Ways to Wellbeing - connection, keeping active, taking notice, keep learning and giving. We have danced in our classrooms, gone for a walk around the school and even given each other massages. 

 

In this week's topic lesson we learnt all about castle attacks. We started by discussing the different castle defences. We read the statement: ‘Castles are too well defended. There is no point attacking them.’ We thought about whether we agreed or disagreed and discussed in our trios. We then learnt about the different forms of castle attacks.

We brought our learning to life and acted out the different forms of castle defences and attacks outside. Warhol put up a mighty castle defence with a portcullis, boiling water, bow and arrows, battlements and a drawbridge. Kusama class attacked by mining under the castle walls, launching heavy stones with trebuchets and using a battering ram to break through the castle walls. Then it was Warhol’s turn to attack and Kusama defended their castle. It was a well fought battle with only a few casualties…

Year 5 exploring materials

 Today in year 5, we explored and identified materials used in our school. We used our scientific knowledge to understand the properties of materials and why these are relevant for certain objects. For example, the school has windows made out of glass. This is a really good material to use because it is transparent and allows light to be let into rooms. 

Year 3 get creative for World Book Day 2021

On Friday 5th March, we celebrated World Book Day. This year, our theme was all about protecting the planet and the effects of plastic on the environment. To help raise awareness of this issue, the children decided to recycle and re-use materials and rubbish around their homes to make their own outfits. We were amazed by their designs and creations! 

Inspired by the non-fiction book 'Protect the Planet' by Jess French, the children also wrote and delivered their own passionate speeches suggesting ways to reduce and re-use plastic waste. It was clear that the children had been honing their oracy skills, by making eye contact, speaking clearly and using appropriate physical gestures to deliver their points. Their arguments were thoughtful, well researched and persuasive. 

Finally, we discussed books that we enjoy reading to escape, which seems particularly poignant during these challenging times, and the children enjoyed curling up in a cosy spot to read their own chosen books. 

Nursery- world book day 2021

 On Friday 5th March the children in nursery joined in dressing up for World Book Day.

We had lots of different characters from Elsa, Anna, Spiderman, Batman, Zog the dragon, Mario and I am Sam from Green Eggs and Ham.

I read as many books as I could throughout the day and every child had a picture taken of them in their costume and we chatted about what their favourite book was and all about their special book. It was a wonderful day and even the growns up took part in the dressing up. 

Forest School in nursery

 This week in nursery we went on our first ever trip to forest school. It was a bit chilly but we had a wonderful time exploring the forest. We made nests from twigs and sticks for our dinosaur eggs that we have been playing with in the role play area. Some children tried very hard to climb on the lower branches of the trees and others enjoyed looking under the logs to find bugs. All the nursery children had to walk very sensibly around the school in pairs holding hands and following a line very quietly and they all did well on their first trip.
