Year 5 newsletter

We have had an amazing start to Year 5 but we may have become slightly obsessed with Central America  (both Ancient and modern)! In addition to locating the countries formerly inhabited by the Maya as part of geography, in history we have investigated Maya maths, identified other ancient civilisations in the world in existence at the same time as the Maya and compared the Anciemt Maya to the Ancient Romans and Ancient Egyptians. We have even begun to debate our big question ‘The Ancient Maya: savvy or savage?’ In English we have used poetry and other texts to empathise with  the tens of thousands of Guetamalan teenagers who attempt to migrate to the USA each year. As a result of this understanding, we wrote heart-wrenching cold task narratives about how it would feel to leave Central America and travel towards the US. In maths we have extended our knowledge of place value to millions and in science we have started our topic of earth and beyond. During the last few weeks, oracy has underpinned much of our discussions and reasoning across the curriculum. As teachers, we have been bowled over by the quality of discussions and the knowledge that the children have applied.
