What Makes An Object Float? Using Metacognition!

In our science topic of forces, we have been thinking about how objects float in water. We were set a challenge of making a boat that could hold the most marbles. We were given card, foil, scissors and masking tape. Firstly we worked independently before sharing our ideas and reasoning with our classmates. Following this reflection, we were given an opportunity to change our design based on the scientific discussions we had. These included how forces might act upon a larger surface area and weight distribution.

Alec commented that he wanted his boat to have a curved bottom similar to a canoe. He then decided he would need the sides to be the same size so that it would balance. We learnt about the effects of upthrust in water.

We then evaluated our final design before making a prediction. We completed metacognition forms to share our thinking around our learning!!

Emily's boat held over 200 marbles!!
