Who were the suffragettes and why is the right to vote important?

We got fully immersed in our new history topic “the Suffragettes’ today in Year 5. As well interpreting events from timelines, we learnt about democracy, parliament and understood how and why people vote. We were surprised to discover that while the Suffragettes were fighting for the right to vote, Captain Scott and other Antarctic explorers were making history on the other side of the world.

 As Jess explained today,

The suffragettes were women who fought for the right to vote (just like men) in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries.
- It is important to vote because everyone has different opinions.
- It is important to vote but you might not get the outcome you desire in an election.
- It is important to vote so why can’t teenagers vote?
