Year 3 Newsletter

Romans - Clever or criminal is the theme for our Topic this term.  With a focus on the Roman invasion of Britain, we began by finding out when the Romans were around by looking at the timeline of world history in the immersion room.  Then we zoomed in closer to their invasion of Britain and plotted these events on a timeline. The first two invasions by Julius Caesar and his armies weren't successful - the local angry tribes put them off and they didn't like the weather!  But Emperor Claudius tried again nearly one hundred years later with bigger armies and it was third time lucky for the Romans! So clever or criminal...we're split fairly evenly in our thoughts about this so far.  But there is so much more to learn... we can't wait!

In art, we have been finding out about Roman clay pottery and what they were used for.  Although the British were already using clay, the Romans were experts and built kilns to mass produce clay products including cooking pots, jars, bowls and cups and building, plumbing and roofing materials!  We are really excited about discovering how the pots were made and making our own soon!

Our poetry unit has seen us discover the humour and hilarity of limericks!  Edward Lear was the expert and we've loved reading some of his nonsensical poems.  We had a go at writing our own - harder than it looks because of the rhyme and syllable structure - but they have caused huge amounts of laughter and enjoyment!  Here is Natalie and Nathaniel's Limerick:

There was a young boy called Zack
Who had a brother called Jack
When he was five
He learned how to drive
And then he was taught how to quack!
