Year 5 Magritte Science - How big is the solar system?

In year 5 we have been investigating the solar system. Last week we discovered that if the Sun was the size of a basketball, the Earth would be 2.16mm big.

This week we looked at how far the planets from the Sun. Mercury (the closest planet) would be 9.80m away from the basketball sized sun. Earth would be 25.38m away and Neptune would be a whopping 769.42m away. That's all the way from school to St. Micheal's Church in town!

We used trundle wheels to measure out a scale model of the first 4 planets in the solar system. We couldn't fit the rest in the school grounds!
